Visual Merchandising Analysis #7

Good Example of a Window Display

The photo above is an example of a well executed window display that successfully demonstrates the design elements and principles. In this display, color is a distinguishable storyteller of the designs. The pattern, broken column and colors used (blue, red, and gold) give an overall oriental feel. Repetition is present with the pattern being used on the shirt and then again within the stain glass window prop. The merchandise and props within the display appear to be proportional as everything seems to be average in size. The use of lines stuck out to me. For example, vertical lines are presented on the shirt on the front and down the middle of the stain glass window. This caused my eyes to move vertically when examining the display. Direction and shape were used interestingly in that square wallets were turned at a diagonal to possibly match the diagonals on the window prop. To conclude, this window display from Versace did a fantastic job creating a masterpiece.

Bad Example of a Window Display

In my opinion, this window display is poorly done and does not look as if much effort was put into the thought process. While there is a blue color scheme, I feel like different shades of blue could have been incorporated to give the display more dimension. Also, I think there is just too much going on in such a small area and there does not seem to be a thoughtful layout. Instead of clumping the purses together, I would have removed one and had the other three placed one on each shelf with lighting directly above each purse. The two sunglasses that are on top of the one purse does not make sense, especially since they are the exact same pair. If their goal was to portray repetition, they would have been better off placing one of the pairs in a different part of the display rather than right next to the exact same pair. The element, line is used on the part dividing the shelves and the front of the entire display. It seems unsuccessful to me because it adds unnecessary busy-ness. Overall, this display team would need to make major changes to this display if they intended to gain customer support.
